With many parts of the UK in the grip of arctic weather conditions, a leading supplier of fork lift trucks has warned the nation’s businesses they could be in for more weather related problems ahead.
Although forecasters predict a thaw towards the end of January, winter is far from over and, Briggs Equipment is urging companies to stay alert to the risk of further snow and ice to avoid any unnecessary downtime or expense if the cold weather returns.
Dean Mansell, national aftersales manager, for Briggs Equipment, explained: ‘It’s vital fleet managers prepare their operators and equipment well in advance of cold spells as the repercussions could seriously harm businesses in the long run.’
‘Snow and ice can increase the risk of accidents and have an impact on productivity, as can a poor working environment. Firm’s that don’t have suitable equipment or the right winter accessories can end up facing unnecessary expense.’

To help maintain high productivity levels, check that your operators have all the necessary clothing to keep them warm, including hats, gloves, waterproof jackets etc, if working outside. If possible, ensure that your outside machines have fully enclosed cabs with heaters.
Make sure you have all necessary forklift attachments for them to work efficiently in snow or ice. Tyre chains, snow ploughs and gritters can help to increase safe site conditions reducing the risk of skidding.
Review your existing fleet to check they can work safely in winter. Additional short-term hire equipment can help to reduce downtime during busy periods.
Although your operators have been trained to use your equipment, ensure drivers are more cautious when operating in harsh weather conditions. They should slow down and avoid sudden acceleration or braking.
‘These are just a few tips for fleet managers to consider,’ continues Dean. ‘Also, antifreeze contains corrosion inhibitors that deteriorate over time so ensure you have fresh antifreeze to prevent corrosion of cast iron and aluminium internal engine parts.’
