Pilz is launching two new Ethernet modules for adding either EtherNet/IP or Profinet communications to its PNOZmulti 2 modular configurable control system for safety and automation functions. As an open, configurable control system, the PNOZmulti 2 can be used flexibly across industry, independently of the higher-level operational control system. The new expansion modules allow for flexible communication between PNOZmulti 2 controllers and others such as those from Rockwell or Siemens.

The PNOZmulti 2 provides easy-to-read diagnostic data and enables virtual inputs/outputs to be used for non-safety-related functions. User-friendly diagnostic and control information reduces downtime and increases plant availability. An integrated Ethernet switch provides collision-free data traffic and enables several communication partners to use the interface simultaneously.

Virtual inputs and outputs are configured easily on a PC using the PNOZmulti Configurator drag-and-drop software tool, which helps to avoid the need for time-consuming, error-prone wiring. The PNOZmulti 2 configurable control systems can be used as a standalone controller or as modular expandable version connected to other PNOZmulti 2 controllers.

Pilz says that the EtherNet/IP or Profinet modules are just the latest additions to the range of communication modules available for the PNOZmulti 2. Other modules enable users to connect the PNOZmulti 2 to, for example, Profibus-DP, CANopen, Modbus TCP, EtherCAT and Ethernet Powerlink networks for transferring diagnostic and status information to higher-level control systems. There is also a module for transmitting data via RS232.
