Durable CB3 boxes replace mesh containers and disposable plastic liners
A municipal waste management authority in north-west Germany is using Craemer CB3 pallet boxes to improve the collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment at its recycling centres.
Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb Emsland, which provides public recycling and waste disposal services across the Emsland district, has introduced approximately 150 CB3 pallet boxes at several sites.
The durable plastic boxes are used as exchangeable collection containers for small waste electrical appliances, replacing the metal mesh boxes and disposable plastic liners previously used.
The change has simplified handling, reduced the use of consumable materials and improved integration with the authority’s existing site logistics.
Eliminating disposable liners
Residents can take small waste electrical appliances to recycling centres, where the items are placed into collection containers. The internal boxes are exchanged for empty ones either at regular intervals or once they are full.
Previously, Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb Emsland used metal mesh boxes. Plastic liners were required to prevent smaller components from falling through the mesh, adding an extra handling stage and generating avoidable plastic film waste.
The liners had to be inserted, inspected and removed, while smaller items could become caught in the mesh or escape if a liner was damaged.
Craemer’s CB3 provides a closed, dimensionally stable alternative that securely contains the collected material without the need for an additional liner.
Once full, the boxes can be collected directly by forklift, exchanged for empty units, transported and temporarily stored. This makes container changes and internal handling simpler and more efficient.
Around 150 CB3 boxes now in operation
Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb Emsland currently uses around 150 CB3 pallet boxes across several recycling centres in the district.
“The stability and handling are excellent, and the product is extremely durable and robust,” said Serina Hofschlag of Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb Emsland.
Michael Winter, Head of Sales for Waste Management Systems at Craemer, said the application demonstrated the versatility of the CB3 beyond conventional industrial and recycling operations.

Cleaner and more efficient collection processes
By removing the need for disposable plastic liners, the CB3 reduces both handling requirements and consumable material use. It also helps keep collection areas cleaner and can be incorporated easily into existing forklift and storage operations.
Full boxes can be exchanged directly for empty units and stacked where appropriate to make efficient use of available storage space.
“The CB3 supports key municipal waste management priorities, including cost-effective operation, durable equipment and efficient processes,” added Serina Hofschlag.
“Based on our experience so far, we would recommend the boxes to other waste management organisations.”
