Dover Motion’s recently announced XMG series miniature micropositioning stages feature a new cutting-edge linear motor design that delivers up to five times more force and twice the force density when compared to similar competitive products

Available in the UK from Heason Technology, the XMG is perfectly placed for demanding applications that demand rapid speeds and smooth motion with extremely consistent and stable velocity or force characteristics – especially where a small form factor is essential. These higher force characteristics translate into much improved throughput capability with benefits that include more moves-per-minute for part positioning, faster step & scan cycles, increased focussing rates and faster frame capture times.

Based on Dover’s well proven Mini-MAG (MMG) series, the XMG is available in base materials of steel or anodised aluminium. With its stiff cross-roller bearing arrangement and powerful 100% cog-free motor, travel range options are 25, 50, 100 and 150 mm. The compact stage is approximately 92 mm wide yet is capable of payloads up to 10 kg or more. Acceleration and velocity ratings are load and feedback dependent but as an example the 50 mm stroke stage is capable of 14g acceleration and maximum velocity can be up to 2 m/sec. The repeatability performance across the range is up to 0.4 microns with overall TIR accuracy below 12 microns for the 150 mm travel stage (0.1 micron encoder). Linear encoder feedback options are available in analogue or digital formats with resolution from 1 to 0.001 microns.

The modular miniature linear stages are easily combined for XY or XYZ geometries and include externally adjustable limit and home sensors. Optional Z-axis counterbalance mechanics are available in compressed air or a newly developed magnetic design. Thanks to its superior force density rating, the XMG has a best-in-class vertical load rating of 500g without needing a counterbalance.
