Blackburn Chemicals Ltd., one of the leading manufacturers of antifoam and speciality surface-active chemicals, has installed a Babcock Wanson HEB 300 Hot Water Boiler into its Lancashire factory as part of an expansion programme.

Blackburn Chemicals is a family run company, founded in 1972, supplying a wide range of industry sectors, including paper, food, paint and textiles, in over 50 countries.  The company is expanding production at its site, but the existing heater had insufficient capacity.  Having explained their requirements to Babcock Wanson, an HEB Hot Water Boiler was recommended due to its efficiency and compact size.

The HEB 300 Hot Water Boiler has been supplied by Babcock Wanson UK with plate heat exchangers for indirect batch heating of process water used in the production of wax and silicone based emulsion technology.  This is primarily for products in the paper and pulp industries.  The Boiler is serving two plants: the Silicone Plant heating 15,000 litres from 5 to 80°C over an eight hour period; and the Paper Plant heating 3,000 litres from 5 to 80°C per hour.

The HEB Boiler is a forced-circulation, fully automatic, oil or gas fired packaged unit, specifically designed for high efficiency and long working life.  The reverse flame design provides optimum furnace loading and the radial firetube assembly minimises material stresses.  A reversible front door allows simple and quick access for inspection of the combustion chamber and reversal tubes without the need to remove the burner.

Nicola John, Factory Manager at Blackburn Chemicals, comments on the company’s decision to fit the new boiler: “It has increased our capacity for hot water and also speeded up production and we are very happy with our purchase.  We have a number of pieces of kit from Babcock Wanson, including stream generators and a thermal fluid heater.  We choose Babcock Wanson due to the high quality of their products and the efficient service that we receive from them.”

In addition to the new HEB 300 Hot Water Boiler, Blackburn Chemicals employs a range of Babcock Wanson equipment including VPX rapid Steam Generators and TPC Thermal Fluid Heaters.
