Visitors to this year’s Health & Safety North 2016 will be able to participate in two interactive sessions, which have been designed to inspire positive health and safety behaviour and help build resilience by successfully managing stressful situations. The sessions, which are part of a free-to-attend conference curated by the British Safety Council, will take place at Bolton Arena on 12th-13th October.

Harry Gallagher and Shaun Curry from training providers Macnaughton McGregor (aka 2Macs) will be hosting a scenario-based workshop in the final session on day one, which offers first-hand experience of health and safety engagement. Conference delegates will be informed about a serious incident and are then presented with a scenario that is played out.

“What we do is go back in time and we witness a conversation between the two key players who could have stopped the accident but didn’t due to various pressures,” said Harry Gallagher. “We halt it at the point where the audience can see what is going to happen next. From then on, the whole process becomes interactive.”

Through a highly enjoyable and memorable process, the audience will get the opportunity to question both individuals, challenge their behaviours and ultimately influence what should have happened, rather than what did happen. Designed to inspire positive health and safety behaviour, the interactive session will enable delegates to develop tips and techniques that they can take back and successfully implement in the workplace to improve health and safety management.

In a second interactive session on day two, Mark Davies, managing director at consultancy 7Futures, draws on his extensive experience of working with elite performers, sports personalities and the military to offer practical advice on resilience building so that delegates can learn how to successfully manage stressful situations.

Mark will consider how to work with resilience to proactively manage performance without compromising people’s health and wellbeing. Outlining a model, he will then show how delegates can treat stress as an adaptive force to strengthen and grow resilience and protect long-term wellbeing.

In a final interactive session, the British Safety Council will also be running a one-day health and safety training course for directors, senior managers, board members and human resource professionals, which covers legal requirements, risk management and individual as well as corporate responsibilities. Participants will be asked to assume the role of company directors and through practical exercises they will gain a firm understanding of positive health and safety management. The course has been designed to give attendees the confidence and skills to implement best practice in their organisation.

“This year’s programme offers people an opportunity to get involved and experience new ways of engaging with health and safety,” said Louise Ward, Policy and Standards Director at the British Safety Council.
