Editor’s comment: “This issue looks at the increasing number of factories and industry sectors that are becoming ‘smart’ – through the use of specialist technologies or data and network sharing. There’s no doubt that this can help to achieve greater efficiencies and future-proof businesses, but some are still yet to reap the benefits as they haven’t made the move towards this new and high tech way of working. Perhaps they are reluctant due to a lack of confidence in migrating a whole business to a more futuristic platform, or perhaps some consider it too expensive. But there are many options available.

“A recent report (see the news story on page 5) stated that many manufacturers have said they still haven’t embraced new concepts like artificial intelligence, and some believe the UK lags behind other leading developed countries.

“Elsewhere, we consider the importance of cleaning systems in a variety of working environments – in terms of reducing health risks and also impressing potential customers.

“On a similar note, facilities management plans help to run an efficient and safe factory, such as cable protection for critical machine parts against chemicals, solvents, dust and dirt.
