Wincanton, the British logistics company, is celebrating success after being announced as the winner of the Safety Award at the prestigious CILT Annual Awards.

The CILT Annual Awards recognise achievement across a number of categories and reward the highest industry standards across logistics and transport. Wincanton’s win in the Safety Award category highlights the achievements of the business and, more specifically, the success of the company’s Sherburn site.

Its Sherburn Distribution Centre is one of the company’s flagship facilities, where more than 1,200 people work ensuring the shelves of a leading UK supermarket’s 200 stores in the north of England remain stocked, all year round.

From the site’s opening in 2008 through to 2013, safety record statistics at Sherburn saw very little movement either up or down. Then, in 2013 the site implemented a new 10-point plan that made the workforce aware of its accountability and behaviours regarding health and safety.

Since the implementation of this plan, along with a number of other initiatives and a consistently sharp focus on health and safety, Sherburn has seen Lost Time Incidents reduced by 55 per cent and RIDDORs (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) have been reduced by 51 per cent.

Dean Clamp, group HSEQ director, said of the award: “I’m thrilled that Wincanton, and the Sherburn team, have been recognised at such a prestigious event. We have always made it clear as a business that our first priority is health and safety and I’m pleased that our dedication is paying off for our colleagues and our business. I’d like to congratulate the other winners as well as all those nominated.”
