Garrandale has designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke boom welding machine at Cartwright Group to speed up the production process and increase manufacturing turnaround at their production facility in Altrincham.
A privately owned, family run, commercial vehicle bodybuilder and trailer manufacturer, Cartwright Group has one of the most efficient plants in Europe, which extends to the manufacture of everything from 3.5 tonne home delivery trucks to 44 tonne double decker trailers.
Cartwright Group owes its success to continued investment in the latest equipment and prides itself on offering a complete solution which meets the specific needs of its customers. The reliance of the machinery installed at the production plant is therefore of the utmost importance.
Andy Coles of Garrandale explains: “One of the key requirements for the Cartwright Group was the ability to manufacture high volumes of components and as their existing machine was only capable of welding up to 600mm per minute this was restrictive for the production process. Garrandale was able to design, manufacture and install a solution capable of welding 900-1000mm per minute that reduced cycle time for their busy manufacturing facility”.
“In addition to the time and resulting cost savings, this new solution also improved the flexibility of the manufacturing facility through its ability to gain access to a much smaller welding envelope and thus allowing the company to produce a wider range of components on one machine.”
The welding equipment for the new machine was supplied by Air Liquide Welding, specialists in welding equipment. Andy says: “The correct choice of welding equipment for the machine was important in speeding up the production process. This particular equipment has a quicker weld time and produces significantly less heat which means that the components will cool down faster and can be removed from the jig sooner, further enhancing productivity at the Altrincham facility.”
The need to speed up the production process was the main driver for the development of this bespoke solution and, following its installation Cartwright Group, has achieved not only this but a number of additional efficiencies in their manufacturing facility.
