A story caught my eye recently regarding the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) bringing a successful proactive prosecution against a specialist food factory for failing to adequately protect its workers. This kind of court case will no doubt become more frequent as accident prevention becomes the driver. The frustrating thing is that it is far quicker, easier and more streamlined to ensure that a written procedure is in place to ensure compliance. I spend a lot of my working time visiting clients on site visits. The case I opened this month’s column with just goes to prove that safety is, I’m sure, number one on any improvement priority list.
